Abstract

For teachers, the evaluation and prediction of pupil performance and achievement are central diagnostic tasks, as well as crucial prerequisites for the individualization of learning processes. In music education, and particularly in music performance situations, diagnostic challenges arise that are demanding in terms of securing diagnostic accuracy. Our study examined 1) the judgment accuracy of pupil music achievement evaluation and prediction among music students playing the role of prospective teachers; 2) the extent to which the provision of various pieces of information about pupil solo singing performances could increase judgment accuracy; 3) to which music students accurately judge the difficulty level of two selected musical pieces as in their prognostic evaluations. An online experiment was conducted with 98 music students. On average, they achieved a level of judgment accuracy comparable to that of teachers of other school subjects, albeit with high between-rater variability. Increasing the variety of information improved the accuracy of performance predictions and evaluations, but only for the rank-order component.
