Processes of globalisation and migration shape pupils’ lived experiences as well as contemporary visual cultures and artistic practices. This research area focuses on intercultural art education in school contexts and investigates how engagement with Global Art and diverse visual cultures can contribute to the development of intercultural competence. Particular attention is given to perspective-taking, critical reflection on one’s own cultural positioning, tolerance of ambiguity, and the ability to recognise different viewpoints and engage in dialogue.
Global Art is understood as a field shaped by transnational artistic interconnections, processes of exchange, and power relations. The research examines how global and previously underrepresented artistic positions can be incorporated into art education without reinforcing fixed cultural categories and stereotypes. It encompasses the development and empirical evaluation of teaching concepts, the investigation of international collaborative projects, and artistic learning processes involving pupils with diverse cultural backgrounds and migration experiences. The aim is to provide a theoretical and empirical foundation for diversity-sensitive, dialogic, and participatory art education.
