Abstract

The mechanical properties of suture materials have a significant impact on wound healing, infection rates and scar formation. Both external and internal factors play an important role, demonstrating the need for careful selection of the appropriate suture material by the surgeon. This study investigates the influence of body fluids on 5 different absorbable suture products, all of the same USP size 4–0. The suture materials are incubated in artificial human saliva, wound fluid exudate and simulated body fluid at 37 °C to simulate body temperature. Mechanical performance is evaluated by uniaxial tensile testing, with breaking force measured after 0, 7, 14, 28 and 70 days of incubation depending on the respective absorption profiles. The results reveal fluid-dependent degradation behavior and corresponding changes in tensile strength. Furthermore, a correlation between degradation kinetics and structural characteristics of the absorbable sutures is observed.
