Two production methods for plate-like nanoparticles in a stirred media mill are presented: I) The delamination of few atomic layer thin sheets from layered materials is shown for molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). II) The plastic deformation of ductile spherical particles is demonstrated for silica. The control of production methods for anisotropic particles requires shape-sensitive characterization methods. The 2D size analysis of non-spherical nanoparticles is challenging. As MoS2 exhibits size dependent optical properties, distributions of the nanoplate dimensions are accessible by analytical ultracentrifugation with UV/Vis/NIR detection. The shape transformation of silica particles is studied quantitatively by flow cytometry which measures forward and sideward laser light scattering.
