Abstract

In this work, we have carried out numerical simulations of single and two-phase fluid flow inside a two-lobed Roots blower. We have leveraged a homogeneous mixture formulation implemented in OpenFOAM® in a compressible cavitating solver with an externally generated numerical grid to simulate the flow phenomena occurring in a Roots blower. Grid studies have been conducted to assess a grid that is fine enough to yield converging results. Pressure and velocity distributions and Inlet and Outlet mass flow rates on the ports of a Roots blower have been compared with numerical results and model test measurements available in the literature. Liquid evaporation and vapor condensation phenomena also have been explored. Finally, the volumetric efficiency of the single and two-phase flow cases also has been assessed.
