Abstract

Instrumental education is a key component of the attractiveness of studying music teaching at German music universities. Student performance development is influenced by various factors, including subject-related prejudices and varying levels of expertise. Despite the pivotal role of instrumental training, empirical research on this topic is scarce. This study examined students’ self-assessments of their instrumental performance development and the influence of prejudice and expertise on their judgements of instrumental performances. Data collection was conducted through an online listening experiment, employing both quantitative and qualitative analyses. Findings indicate that only two thirds of the surveyed students perceived an improvement in their instrumental abilities. However, no significant influence of prejudice on judgements was detected. Expertise level played a significant role in performance assessment, with more expert students providing stricter evaluations. Qualitative analysis revealed that both musical and non-musical criteria influenced evaluations, with teachers typically assessing more deficit-oriented and with more specific criteria than students.
