This paper examines the occurrence of deception markers in interrogations
in the Netflix series Criminal: UK (2019-present). It explores whether these markers
align more with objective deceptive behaviour (to create an authentic police
investigation scene) or rather with the audience's beliefs about what deceptive
behaviour looks like. Drawing on Vrij's (2008) collection of deceptive cues, which
includes vocal, visual and verbal aspects, the study conducts a multimodal analysis of
the suspects' statements. The findings offer insights into the interplay of language and
visuals in on-screen representations of alleged criminals, highlighting the influence of
writers' and viewers' beliefs on their portrayal.
