Background: Occupational self-efficacy expectations (OSE) are considered a relevant predictor for successful return-to-work in employees with mental disorders. However, specific interventions to promote OSE do not exist. The present study investigated whether a newly developed cognitive-imaginative OSE-module is suitable for (1) generating imaginative coping experiences (ICE), (2) preparing real coping efforts (behavioural relevance; BR) and (3) addressing OSE. Methods: The OSE-module was conducted and videotaped during a short-term work-focused intervention (N = 22). Using videorecordings, independent raters assessed OSE and indicators for ICE and for BR. Self-assessments of OSE were made before treatment and at the time of the OSE-module. Results: All ICE-indicators (cooperation, vividness, emotional involvement, cognitive flexibility) were rather high. Means of BR-indicators showed that cognitive gains were moderate, intentions for behaviour change were rather high and identification of models was low. Observer-rated OSE was positively associated to self-rated OSE before treatment (r = 0.47, p = 0.025) and during OSE-module (r = 0.51, p = 0.014). Conclusion: The results imply that in the OSE-module (1) ICE were generated, (2) intentions for behaviour change were promoted and (3) self-efficacy relevant cognitions were activated. The OSE-module appears to be a suitable approach to cognitive-motivational priming of coping efforts. Future studies should investigate the effects of the OSE-module on real coping experiences and OSE change.
