Abstract

The principles of dynamic light scattering (DLS) are discussed. Starting from classical hydrodynamics the dependence of the Rayleigh and Brillouin light scattering process from the volume of a fluid and also for the scattering of laser light from particles and liquid surfaces or boundary surface layers between two different phases between the analyzing scattered light spectrum and the material data is pointed out. In this connection, the development steps are documented that contribute to the successful use of the DLS in material data research. Especially in this respect the experimental arrangement of the methods, analysis, and evaluation processes are presented. The performance is finally demonstrated with results for thermal conductivity, diffusion coefficient, sound dampening and velocity, kinematic or dynamic viscosity, and surface tension. Using the results for toluene as reference fluid, the accuracy of the DLS compared with recognized reference data obtained by conventional measurement methods is discussed. For the determination of transport coefficients and other thermophysical properties DLS offers the unique possibility to record numerous material data with the help of an individual experimental construction basis and to determine them partly simultaneously. DLS is basically disturbance-free and in general non-invasive with respect to thermodynamic equilibria.
