When L-ascorbic acid (AA) is heated in the presence of Nα-acetyl-L-arginine, a main product can be detected by HPLC/UV. The compound was isolated and identified by spectroscopic data and synthesis as Nα-acetyl-Aδ >;-(4-(1,2-dihydroxy-3-propyliden)-3-imidazolin-5-on-2-yl)-L- ornithine(DPI) (1a), An analogous derivative (1b) was obtained, starting from methylguanidine, a model compound for arginine. 1a is also formed from L-dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) and xylosone, degradation products of AA. The yield of 1a was investigated at different reaction temperatures, times, and pH-values.
