It is shown by the example of a ceramic tape casting process, how advances in the field of process engineering lead to improved material properties. One great advance is the possibility of producing nanoparticles in stirred media mills. The nano-sized particle suspensions can be directly processed to ceramic tapes. The processing of nanoparticles requires specifically adjusted process conditions, but leads to a drastic improvement of the final product properties. Hence, dense and crack-free ceramic tapes with a higher mechanical strength, a lower surface roughness and a translucent character compared to tapes from micro-sized powders can be obtained. © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
