The subproject “Künstlerische Bildung digital” (“Digital Art Education”) formed part of the collaborative research project DiäS (“Teachers’ Digital-Aesthetic Sovereignty as a Foundation for Cultural, Artistic, Musical, Poetic, and Physical Education in the Digital World”). It was jointly conducted by the Chair of Art Education and Art Didactics at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and the Institute of Art Education at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.
The subproject aimed to strengthen the digital-aesthetic sovereignty of pre-service and practising art teachers. This refers to their ability to use digital media and technologies in an informed, autonomous, and safe manner, while critically reflecting on their potential, limitations, and impact on processes of art education. The project centred on a crossover approach: analogue, tactile-material, and digital modes of artistic practice were not regarded as opposites but combined in artistic and art educational processes. The approach also took account of learners’ diverse backgrounds and needs, as well as questions of participation and inclusion.
In collaborative seminars at FAU and LMU, art education students worked with primary and secondary school teachers to develop teaching concepts for digitally supported artistic learning. These concepts were tested in school classrooms, documented, and reflected upon from the perspectives of the participating teachers, students, and pupils. The teaching and learning arrangements developed and refined through this process provided the basis for the free, self-paced Open vhb course “Digitale Bildkulturen im Kunstunterricht: Ein Universum an Möglichkeiten im Crossover” (“Digital Visual Cultures in Art Education: A Universe of Possibilities through Crossover”).
The course was evaluated with teachers and art education students using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The findings are being used to further develop the course, analysed as part of the project’s research, and disseminated through academic publications.
