A wide range of measures is to be implemented at 31 FAU locations spread across the cities of Erlangen, Nuremberg, and Fürth. These include infrastructure improvements, such as covered bike parking spaces, bike racks, shower facilities, and bike repair stations.
In addition, soft measures such as equipping the FabLab’s DIY bike repair shop with tools, providing informational materials, purchasing electric cargo bikes for climate-neutral transportation, and launching an interactive bike self-assessment tool will be implemented. Giveaways such as bike seat covers for FAU members are also planned; a slogan contest for these is still open until June 30, 2026. In addition, further mobility surveys will be conducted in the fall of 2026 and the fall of 2029 to monitor the success.
Accounting for nearly one-third of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, commuting at FAU makes up a large portion of the university’s greenhouse gas footprint. However, according to the 2023 mobility survey, one-quarter of both students and employees who currently use private motorized transportation (cars, motorcycles, etc.) could envision switching to eco-friendly modes of transportation (walking, biking, and public transit) if measures to make these options more attractive were implemented. With the implementation of this funded project, we aim to take the first steps toward this goal and put into practice several key measures developed as part of the FAU Mobility Concept for the “Bicycling” action area. In this way, the funding also contributes to the continued implementation of the master plan for the Erlangen South Campus.
