Project details

Short description

The shipbuilding industry has a long history and has been an important part of the European economy for centuries. However, with the introduction of new technologies and Industry 4.0, the skills and knowledge requirements have changed.

To address this, a new two-year project, All Hands on Deck 360° (AHOD 360), has been launched to rejuvenate the shipbuilding workforce and make training content more attractive to young students. The project also aims to promote the shipbuilding profession and raise awareness of the opportunities it offers.

AHOD 360 combines cultural heritage with digital content, technologies and practices to develop new approaches or methods to teaching and learning. Thus, the project combines tradition with innovation, which can create a new vision of the future for an entire professional field.

The project consortium has paid particular attention to the horizontal priority "Addressing digital transformation" because it aims to improve learning in vocational education through the digital transformation of content by using different technologies, including immersive learning experiences through 360-degree videos that allow learners to virtually see a shipyard and a shipbuilder at work and explain their experiences.

Establishing digital tools in vocational training also seems useful because it avoids losing knowledge acquired by professionals when they retire. For this purpose, the vocational training priority "Contribution to innovation in vocational training" was chosen because we are applying new and more relevant learning methods in the training of traditional trades (specifically shipbuilding), which could be extended in the future to other traditional trades such as carpenters, joiners and upholsterers.

Another relevant priority in this project is the vocational training priority of "adapting vocational training to the needs of the labor market", as the need for skilled workers in this field is already growing in many countries in Europe, as there are fewer experts than before (or they are old). But above all, it is important that their knowledge is not lost, and in this way this experience will be available and networks of shipbuilders will be established across Europe, working together to produce the content and share knowledge.

The Innovation in Learning Institute (ILI) is acting as the lead in this project to create the 360° shipyards. One suitable shipyard per maritime area will be selected for implementation as a virtual learning environment. Numerous multimedia and interactive learning units will be developed for each shipyard, including immersive videos. The final product will be a 360° panoramic tour, which will be made available on a multilingual website with additional support material and interactive self-tests.
