The social relevance of artificial
intelligence (AI) has increased significantly in recent years thanks to various technological developments. Consequently, AI
systems are also becoming more important in the lives of K-12 students. This
leads to a need for action in the educational sector, as the subject
cannot be intuitively understood due to its complexity. Examples of
applications such as self-driving cars and facial recognition software are
already familiar to students from the media and social networks. Nevertheless, they are barely able to assess these phenomena because they lack an
understanding of how AI systems work. In this context, it is the task of
schools to teach the basics and AI background knowledge to enable students to deal with artificial intelligence systems
appropriately. However, there is currently a lack of innovative
approaches, materials, educational plans, and studies on how the topic
and the underlying concepts can be integrated into school lessons. Also, many teachers do not have the necessary expertise in AI. Therefore, the research project aims at an educational analysis and the adaption of the subject area for CS education and professional development. Within this framework, strategies and
approaches for teaching the topic of artificial intelligence to teachers
are to be developed and evaluated.
