Short description

A mile-stone for the german energy transition is the decentralization of the energy production. Small-scale and high efficient combined heat and power plants (CHP) which provide heat and electrical energy are ideal. These plants merge the commonly split generation of heat and power and can, therefore, reach an overall efficiency of up to 90 %.

In this project the institute of energy process engineering and the institute for factory automation and production systems of the FAU are working on a new and simple 1 kWel micro-scale CHP setup. In the first step a commercial pellets firing system is linked with an organic Rankine cycle which is built with mass-produced parts by Orcan Energy. In addition, inexpensive and proven-in-use hot-water storage tanks are used as an energy buffer and for storage, resulting in reduced investment costs. In order to achieve an efficient and profitable setup, this system is embedded into a smart home environment. The second step is the integration and link of the ORC with a high efficient micro-fluidized bed furnace.

The feasibility and the economy of the system will be prospected in a one-year field test.
