Scientific Abstract

Polyurethane foams combine already a low thermal conductivity (λ ~ 20 mW/m*K) with optimal mechanical properties. Furthermore, there is a well-developed industrial infrastructure in order to keep the manufacturing of polyurethane (PU) -raw materials (polyols and isocyanates) comparatively cost effective. In contrast to the most established thermal insulation materials PU has further innovation potential for a substantial reduction of the effective thermal conductivity. In the project, a new approach should be pursued in order to reduce the λ-value of PU foams to well below 15 mW/m*K.
