Abstract

This article deals with characteristics of contextualized learning materials and their effects on students’ situational interest and learning performance. For this purpose, hands-on learning material, which vary in terms of context characteristics (everyday relatedness/special phenomena) and problem orientation (problem oriented/non problem oriented), were developed. We realized this investigation in a pre-post-design with 614 students from grade nine. 419 complete data sets were used for data analyses. As dependent variables both students’ situational interest and their domain specific content knowledge were measured. While the situational interest questionnaire was applied subsequently to each learning task, the content knowledge test was completed before and after the intervention. The results show effects of the context variable for both the feeling- and value-related valence of situational interest. Moreover, the perceived enjoyment of a task is moderated by the individual subject and content related interest of the students. In addition, a main effect of the problem orientation variable indicates that students’ learning performance is higher when they have learned within a problem oriented condition. However, there are differential effects according to context characteristics.
