Abstract

Covalent two-dimensional (2D) patterning of graphene allows for local tuning of its electronic and chemical properties while preserving the exceptional intrinsic characteristics of non-modified regions. However, most established approaches rely on multistep procedures and solid-phase reagent coatings, which limit flexibility, scalability, and the attainable degree of functionalization. Here, we establish a λ3-iodane-based solution-phase laser ‘writing’ (SPLW) strategy for covalent graphene patterning that exploits continuous precursor supply at the graphene surface to access high-density functionalization beyond the range attainable with the corresponding film-based approach. The degree of modification can be precisely tuned via irradiation parameters and reaction conditions, enabling graphene to be driven continuously across a broad range of covalent functionalization. Across this range, the Raman response associated with covalent sp2-to-sp3 rehybridization evolves non-monotonically, first increasing and subsequently decreasing as the density of covalently bound addends increases. Temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy traces this evolution in reverse during thermal addend detachment and further reveals structural limits associated with extensive functional group attachment.
