Abstract

Dynamic light scattering (DLS) is widely applied to determine translational particle diffusivities D P in dispersions. However, the accurate and simultaneous determination of multiple D P, i associated with different particle species i in multimodal dispersions remains challenging. In this work, a systematic evaluation of DLS regarding its application for the accurate determination of D P, i in multimodal dispersions is performed, focusing on the characterization of bimodal systems. For this, aqueous dispersions consisting of binary combinations of unmodified isotropic polystyrene particles with nominal diameters of d P,nominal = (50, 100, 200, and 250) nm are investigated, where the evaluation of DLS is performed by comparison with reliable D P data accessed for unimodal dispersions of the considered individual particle species. Focusing on the determination of D P, i by heterodyne DLS experiments, the technique is systematically evaluated by the variation of R φ and R d, i.e., the ratios of the volume fraction and of d P,nominal of the smaller particle species to those of the larger species. In this way, the reliable determination of D P, i is assessed considering the amplitudes and the temporal separation of the signal contributions related to the diffusion of individual particle species. Studying the dispersions at two different total particle volume fractions φ total and varying R φ and R d between (0.1 and 51) and (0.2 and 0.8), experimental conditions allowing the reliable determination of D P, i are identified. Further evaluating the determination of D P, i applying a heterodyne or homodyne detection scheme, heterodyne DLS was demonstrated to be superior as it provides a more accurate determination of D P, i .
