Abstract

The study of texts—authentic, internally coherent functional units of discourse—is central to many linguistics subfields. Text varieties—registers, text types, and genres, among others—have been studied by different research traditions with a particular research focus or methodological approach: concerned with lexico-grammatical characteristics of culturally-recognized text varieties (studies of register), identifying new linguistically or situationally uniform groupings of texts regardless of their cultural category (studies of text types), and focusing on the structural rhetorical organization of texts (studies of genre). This article overviews distinct approaches to the study of texts in corpus linguistics.
