Abstract

Corpus researchers often wish to retrieve constructions, lexico-grammatical frames, or discourse patterns with many unpredictable surface forms. Regular expressions make such patterns searchable by describing them abstractly. This article introduces the core syntax—sets, ranges, quantifiers, and grouping, applied to linguistic examples throughout. We show how regular expressions combine with grammatical annotation to query both individual tokens and multi-token sequences.
