Sprag clutches are essential functional components in the drivetrain of modern bicycles and especially e-bikes. Despite their technical relevance, only a few empirically reliable characteristic values for the design, evaluation, and optimization of these friction-based machine elements have been available to date. As part of a joint research project, Paul Müller Industrie GmbH & Co. KG and the Chair of Engineering Design (KTmfk) at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg developed a novel test rig that reproduces the key operating mechanisms of sprag clutches under realistic conditions (Figure 1). The test rig enables both static load tests and highly dynamic switching events and provides, for the first time, reproducible empirical data on torsional spring characteristics, switching behaviour and characteristic failure mechanisms. The results form a foundation for simulation, component design, and the development of durable, efficient, and lightweight e-bike drivetrain systems.
