Abstract
This contribution addresses neglected aspects of digitalization. We found cybersecurity, an interdisciplinary field calling for multiperspectival investigation, to be suffused with the production and processing of multiple temporalities. A focus on temporality allows us to grasp essential tensions of socio-technical orders and move beyond technocentric logics of events. The primary thesis of our article posits that cybersecurity displays a form of cooperation under fraught temporal conditions. We show this to be the case both in concrete organizational contexts and in an overarching global cybersecurity regime. Boundary objects, such as material tactics, IT security standards, and concepts of resilience, play an important role here. They mediate knowledge as they are continually shaped and reconfigured in practice, exhibiting interpretive flexibility embodied across actors and materialities. An underlying infrastructural layer, marked by multiple technical temporalities, operates beneath the practices surrounding boundary objects of cybersecurity. Based on three empirical projects (mundane practices, standardization and resilience) the contribution presents the temporal logics of digitized societies and their associated tensions: a) event temporality, b) infrastructural temporality, and c) reflexive temporality.
