August Rauber (1841–1917) is widely known as founder of the influential anatomy textbook Rauber–Kopsch , yet his early contributions to the functional interpretation of bone structure have received comparatively little attention. In two pioneering publications from 1875 and 1876, Rauber presented a comprehensive mechanical analysis of bone architecture that anticipated several principles later associated with Roux, Wolff, Pauwels, and Kummer. Based on investigations of bending stress in long bones, Rauber described bone as an economically constructed structure in which maximal mechanical resistance is achieved with minimal material expenditure. He demonstrated that tubular bones are subjected to both compressive and tensile forces during bending and identified the existence of a neutral fiber within the region of the medullary cavity. Rauber further interpreted the architecture of cancellous bone as a functional adaptation to mechanical loading, proposing that trabeculae align along trajectories of maximum tension and compression. In addition, he analyzed the mechanical significance of bone cross-sectional geometry and showed that elliptical and triangular cross-sections provide mechanically favorable configurations for structures subjected to bending stress. Despite the originality of these findings, Rauber’s work was only partially acknowledged in later foundational studies of functional bone anatomy and biomechanics. Reassessment of his publications demonstrates that key principles of mechanically optimized bone architecture were formulated decades earlier than commonly recognized, highlighting Rauber’s important role as an early pioneer in the functional analysis of the musculoskeletal system.
