Abstract

Characterizing the acoustics of ducted fans is challenging in practice, due to the presence of multi ple superimposed modes and the complex flow conditions. In this paper we compare two methods that are based on different principles, namely the slit tube probe measurement technique proposed in the international standard and the multi-port method. On a modular test rig, a 12-bladed ax ial fan is characterised using both measurement techniques. The comparison of the measurement results at two operating points shows that both measurement techniques can be suitable for the acoustic characterisation of ducted fans. The advantages and disadvantages of the two methods are discussed in detail to enable engineers to select the best method for their application.
