Abstract

Permian ammonoids in Xizang (Tibet) are rare and poorly documented. In this study, we describe two ammonoid species, i.e., Stacheoceras trimurti Diener, 1897 and a new species Stacheoceras resaensis n. sp., from the Xiukang limestone block in the Yarlung-Zangbo Suture Zone. This finding increases the known ammonoid diversity of the Xiukang limestone and its surrounding blocks from eight to ten species. The occurrence of S. trimurti indicates a Wuchiapingian age. By summarizing ammonoid, brachiopod, fusulinid and conodont data, we reassess the age range of the limestone blocks in Lhaze County, which spans from the Wordian to the Wuchiapingian, and possibly extends into the Induan. Finally, we summarise the taxonomy of Stacheoceras, recording at least 32 valid species, and discuss their temporal and spatial distributions. Stacheoceras first appeared in the Kungurian and persisted until the Changhsingian, with a palaeogeographic distribution largely confined to low- and mid-latitude regions.
