Abstract

Photonic concepts are used to increase the optical efficiency of solar cells. In this chapter, we discuss different examples that show the diversity of possible strategies to optically improve solar cell systems. Photonic crystals will play an important role as instruments used for this task. The examples include seven cases from different fields of application. We start with an introduction into photonic crystals in section 3. A familiar concept, the antireflection effect caused by interference in thin optical layers, is discussed in section 4. The topic of section 5 is the front surface texture and its impact on reflection and absorption of light. In section 6, we discuss the effect of back surface structures with the aim to increase the light pathlength in the solar cell. In section 7 we consider multijunction solar cells and the effects of current matching of spectral selective intermediate reflectors. The topic of section 8 is the photonic light trap, a concept for light trapping with angular confinement. In section 9 we discuss optical concepts for the fluorescent concentrator, and the topic of example seven is optical concepts for frequency conversion materials.
