Abstract

Tracking refers to a technology that allows the localization of small sensors or other target structures over time and can thus be a very handy option for localization of applicators, needles, or catheters in brachytherapy (BT) applications. Electromagnetic tracking (EMT) achieves that task by analyzing the voltage induced in sensor coils that are located in a known magnetic field produced by a field generator (FG). Such coils can be embedded into (surgical) instruments attached to a sensor cable or needle that is inserted into the patient and thus allow tracking without a line of sight between the detector and sensor. The technique has been known since the 1970s (review in Franz et al. 2014) and applied in numerous medical applications. Among the first publications describing EMT application in BT is Strassmann et al., who reported already in 2000 about an EMT-based navigation system for placement of needles in interstitial BT (Straßmann et al. 2000).
