Laser-based powder bed fusion has emerged as a key technology in additive manufacturing in recent years. This study investigates the application of laser-based powder bed fusion for the metallization of alumina substrates using pre-alloyed copper-titanium powder. To achieve a strong bond between ceramics and copper-based alloys, active elements such as titanium are commonly used. However, since copper-titanium alloys exhibit relatively low thermal and electrical conductivity, additional copper layers are applied to ensure efficient metallization for electronic applications. The primary objective is to develop an alternative metallization method for ceramics that could replace or complement conventional techniques such as Direct Copper Bonding or Active Metal Brazing. This additive metallization approach provides the opportunity for mechatronic integrated metallizations for electronics in harsh and high-power application. The research analyzes the specific challenges and opportunities in processing copper and copper-titanium alloys on ceramic substrates using laser-based powder bed fusion. Two laser systems, operating in the green and infrared spectral range, are used to examine material- and wavelength-specific properties.
