Starting from Elon Musk’s 2025 claim that “AI and robots will replace all jobs,” this paper explores whether his post-labor vision also extends to religious professions. Drawing on examples such as robotic priests, religious chatbots, and AI-generated worship services, it argues that Artificial Intelligence is already capable of performing many religious functions—teaching, pastoral care, and ritual participation among them. The question, then, is not whether Artificial Intelligence will enter the religious sphere, but how we should respond. The paper proposes a double distinction. On one side, it argues that total rejection is no longer viable: shrinking congregations and clergy shortages make technological assistance increasingly necessary, and a credible pastoral practice must engage the digital lifeworlds of those it serves. On the other side, uncritical enthusiasm is equally misguided: religious life must resist becoming another node in an AI-driven “burnout society.” Following Johann Baptist Metz, religion should remain an “interruption” within systems of acceleration—grounded in bodily presence and human encounter. Between these extremes lies a path of discernment: embracing the possibilities of Artificial Intelligence without surrendering what makes religion irreducibly human.
