Skin cancer is a very common cancer and is the most frequently detected cancer. In comparison to its incidence, the non-melanomatous cancers of the skin have a very low mortality rate. They are, however, a source of anxiety, disfigurement, and morbidity. Basal cell cancers rarely metastasize to lymph nodes, but squamous cell cancers can spread to lymph nodes and distant organs and can be fatal if they are not treated. The other skin cancers that arise from the skin appendages tend to have an aggressive natural history with rapid spread systemically. Over 80% of tumours develop in the head and neck region and affect cosmetically sensitive areas.
