Dying and death might take effect as abjects and have negative impact such as rejection and exclusion on an individual and social level. This might be true for seriously ill and dying people as well as for their loved ones. Persons working in hospice and palliative care also experience these mechanisms. The manuscript at hand outlines how the handling of abjects is part of the daily routine of care. Especially at the end of life, dealing with abjects might become challenging for patients, their loved ones, and health care professionals. We present theoretical concepts of hospice and palliative care, on individual and family based level (“total pain” concept) as well as on societal level (“compassionate community”). The concepts could mitigate the transgressive potential of abjects and might lead to a more relaxed and less marginalizing handling of dying and death. Overall, the manuscript points to the potential of professional palliative care attitudes to provide coping strategies for negative effects of rejection (exclusion, stigmatization).
