In the manufacture of electric motors, the stator is the most expensive component of the electric motor, accounting for 35% of the total costs. For this reason, the stator is very interesting in terms of automation and offers various possibilities for increasing production efficiency. In addition to some process steps that are already highly automated, others are still largely manual. These mainly include work steps in the area of insulation assembly. In particular, the fitting of insulation sleeves and the assembly of the end shield should be mentioned here. The main challenges of robotic processing is the flexible behavior of the wires, handling of their wire ends and the detection of those due to its undetermined location. This aspect occurs not only with flat wires, but also with classic round wires or litz wires. Collaborative kinematics paired with an instrumented end effector system are required to raise the level of automation in these work steps. Both are used in the research presented in this paper. The results achieved show the possibilities of a collaborative system to also automate the steps of end shield assembly and wire end insolation which is a further step towards a fully automated stator production.
