Abstract

Recent advances in microchip manufacturing and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology have sparked a great opportunity for new and innovative radar systems. With the combination of digital radar systems based on Radio Frequency System on Chip (RFSoC) and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology, as well as modern UAVs, new highly configurable, multistatic radar systems become possible. Towards this end, a distributed, UAV-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system is developed at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). This Software-Defined Radar (SDR) system concept is described in this paper and key challenges are addressed.
