Abstract

Sustainability and resilience are becoming increasingly important in the management of industrial supply chains. This study explores how these two dimensions are integrated into the supply chains of Austrian industrial companies, identifying the factors that promote or hinder their implementation. The analysis is based on a multiple case study and draws on 18 expert interviews with sustainability and supply chain managers from 12 Austrian industrial firms, conducted between May and July 2024. The findings reveal a lack of consistent sustainability definitions, complicating integration processes across companies. Although sustainability and resilience are generally considered to be positively linked, they are often addressed separately in practice. Key enablers for successful integration include top management commitment as well as employee involvement and training. In contrast, cost pressures, internal resistance, a shortage of qualified employees, and customer reluctance to pay act as major barriers. This study contributes to existing literature by offering empirical insights into the interplay of sustainability and resilience, including synergies and trade-offs between the two concepts. These findings provide a basis for developing practical strategies that align sustainability and resilience in supply chain management.
