Abstract

Driven by the opportunities for condition monitoring and new business models, Digital Twins have become a popular topic within research and industrial application over the last years. At its core, the concept of Digital Twins describes a model-based analysis of operational data to assess the current state of a system and predict future behavior. A key challenge in this context is the transformation of models developed during design phase for use in operational deployment. In certain cases, entirely new models must be created to meet operational requirements. In others, existing design-phase models, originally intended to validate system properties, can be repurposed. However, such reuse necessitates substantial modifications, particularly with respect to model fidelity and computational efficiency. A streamlined process supports this reuse of design models for later purposes in the operation of Digital Twins and determines its feasibility. This paper presents a structured approach to connect early system architecture considerations with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models for the purpose of preparing them for a reuse in a Digital Twin. For this, an extension of a SysML Profile for the design of Digital Twins (RSM-DT) is presented to integrate domain elements into the system architecture and connect them with other system elements. Furthermore, an integration of an add-in into an existing Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tool chain is presented to test the process and the application for a Digital Twin.
