BACKGROUND: Preparing medical students for translational research and data-driven decision-making remains a major challenge in modern medical education. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the didactic potential of cBioPortal to teach core competencies in translational research within two different educational settings. METHODS: At two German universities, cBioPortal was integrated into existing modules using institution-specific instructional designs and evaluated using student and instructor feedback. RESULTS: Students at both institutions developed essential translational research competencies. DISCUSSION: The platform effectively supported the development of data literacy and translational thinking, though learning outcomes varied depending on didactic framing. CONCLUSION: cBioPortal is a flexible and effective platform for teaching translational research, supporting curricula that prepare future physicians for data-driven and personalized medicine.
