Abstract

The one-two pass is a basic, though challenging, passing combination in soccer (and other team sports), involving two players passing the ball back and forth between each other, while changing positions on the pitch. It can be read as an empirical realization of the basic form of the social, as understood by communicative constructivism. This chapter uses the one-two pass as a metaphor to demonstrate the analytical potential inherent in communicative constructivism, highlighting its specific strengths in understanding the sensoriality, materiality, and spatiality of social interactions. I argue that a successful one-two pass is a bodily and spatial realization of the three core features of the social: the reciprocity of perspectives, the entanglement of in-order-to and because motives, and the production of self-feeling. Based on these theoretical considerations, the chapter also explores the diagnostic potential of communicative constructivism, as forms and styles of passing vary over time and space. Regarding the debate on constructivism and realism, I emphasize the reality of communicative constructions, such as one-two passes.
