The stages of puberty, pregnancy, and menopause are characterized by hormonal changes and their effects. Recognizing and treating the various issues that arise during these special phases in a girl’s or woman’s life regularly confronts us with specific challenges in everyday clinical practice. What all three stages have in common is that a lack of scientifically sound data often makes it difficult to provide evidence-based recommendations and treatment decisions. Sport is a key health factor in all stages of life. Female athletes should receive care that takes into account the hormonal characteristics of the different stages of life on an individual basis.
