Abstract
Per la scrittura dell’articolo del 1939 Il contributo italiano agli studi nel campo delle lingue e letterature dell’Estremo Oriente negli ultimi cento anni il sinologo e matematico italiano Giovanni Vacca (1872-1953), oltre ad avvalersi di informazioni dirette e conoscenze personali, fece riferimento a numerose pubblicazioni in lingue occidentali che egli stesso possedeva e conservava nella sua biblioteca privata. Questa importante collezione bibliografica sulla Cina e sull’Asia orientale (oltre 1500 volumi tra libri, estratti e periodici) è dagli anni Sessanta conservata presso la Fondazione Giorgio Cini a Venezia. Il presente studio ricostruisce le pratiche di lettura, studio e ricerca di Vacca legate all’uso della sua personale raccolta. Dediche manoscritte, timbri ed ex libris, segni di lettura e annotazioni da lui stesso lasciate sui volumi sono infatti elementi intimamente legati al processo di redazione dell’articolo del 1939. Permettono inoltre di tracciare la rete di relazioni accademiche e professionali che lo studioso intratteneva con l’ambiente intellettuale europeo e statunitense di inizio Novecento, restituendo uno scenario culturale articolato, caratterizzato da scambi di conoscenze, confronto e circolazione di idee e, infine, costruzione di nuovi saperi.
For the writing of his 1939 article Il contributo italiano agli studi nel campo delle lingue e letterature dell’Estremo Oriente negli ultimi cento anni [The Italian contribution to studies in the field of Far Eastern languages and literatures in the last hundred years], the Italian sinologist and mathematician Giovanni Vacca (1872-1953), in addition to making use of direct information and personal knowledge, referred to numerous publications in Western languages that he himself owned and kept in his personal library. This important bibliographic collection on China and East Asia (over 1500 volumes including books, offprints and periodicals) has been preserved at the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice since the 1960s. The present study reconstructs Vacca’s reading, study and research practices related to the use of his personal collection. Handwritten dedications, stamps and ex libris, reading marks and annotations he himself left on the volumes are in fact elements intimately linked to the process of drafting the 1939 article. They also allow to trace the network of academic and professional relationships that the scholar had with the European and American intellectual environment of the early twentieth century, thereby outlining an articulated cultural scenario, characterized by the exchange of knowledge, comparison and circulation of ideas and, finally, the construction of new knowledge.
