Abstract

Surgical correction of a perimembranous ventricular septal defect (VSD) is one of the most common pediatric cardiac surgery interventions. Surgery is delayed until the age of 3–6 months where the risk of correction in experienced hands is nearly 0 %. Successful surgical correction of a VSD means the beginning of a normal physical and mental development for the children. After complete VSD closure patients have a normal life expectancy just like other newborns with a healthy heart, in the absence of any concomitant severe disease.
