Abstract

Road debris, a significant cause of accidents beyond driver errors, requires reliable detection and removal by a special purpose vehicle to ensure road safety. While lidar-or camera-based approaches depend on weather and lighting conditions, this work presents a novel concept for detecting road debris using automotive side-looking synthetic aperture radar with the back-projection algorithm. This approach also enhances the signal-to-clutter ratio and angular resolution compared to common multiple-input multiple-output radar signal processing. The performance of the proposed concept is evaluated with radar targets of specified radar cross sections on different surfaces to provide a quantitative measure for the detection quality. For qualitative verification, real-world road debris is tested to ensure functionality. Based on the promising results, further optimizations are discussed, and potential applications for roadways, runways, and railways are highlighted.
