Abstract

5G non-public networks play a crucial role in industrial use cases, where high requirements for communication are demanded. Due to the nature of wireless communications, they are susceptible to jamming, which can severely degrade the network performance and, in the worst case, cause a denial of service. In order to recognize such security threats, jamming detection parameters are needed. The aim of this work was first to investigate the jamming detectability of various parameters, like throughput, block error rate, modulation and coding scheme index, channel quality indicator, and central processing unit temperature of the user equipment, and second how those reacted on different jamming waveforms square, triangle, sawtooth, and Gaussian noise. The third point of the investigation was to elaborate a ranking of the parameters concerning their jamming detection time. An experiment evaluated the parameters for the downlink communication of an indoor 5G non-public network at the Technical Faculty of Erlangen, Germany. The block error rate and the central processing unit temperature of the user equipment were unsuitable for jamming detection. In contrast, throughput, modulation and coding scheme index, and channel quality indicator were suitable. In the measurement campaign, the impact of different jammer waveforms on those parameters was possible, but no ranking of those parameters was possible regarding the jamming detection time. In future work, we will investigate the impact of various jammer positions and the movement of the user equipment on the jamming detection parameters.
