Abstract

Measuring particle sizes in dispersions or emulsions is of great importance for product development or process control to ensure a high product quality. However, flowing liquids or low concentrations pose challenges to already existing techniques. In this work, a novel Broadband Elastic Light Scattering (BELS) setup is presented allowing for the measurement of the size distribution of spherical sub-micron particles. The setup developed employs a broadband laser-driven light source, elastically scattered light is detected in nearly backwards-scattering configuration (170°) over a wide spectral range (250–950 nm). Besides a compact setup, this configuration also allows for particle size measurements with limited optical accessibility, as input and signal collection can be performed through the same optical access. To demonstrate the feasibility of the method, different monodisperse particle samples (286 nm and 499 nm) and mixtures of them were analyzed. For reconstruction of the particle size distribution two methods are used based on Mie scattering theory. First, a linear inversion model using Tikhonov regularization and second a Bayesian approach based on parametrization using two log-normal distributions are employed. The resulting particle size distributions show a very good agreement with the manufacturer data. Moreover, the volume fractions of the mixtures determined using BELS agree well with the mixing ratios of the stock dispersions used.
