Abstract

As the share of power electronics and DC systems
within the existing power system increases, challenges associated
with harmonics become increasingly significant. This paper
investigates harmonic impedance measurement in interconnected
DC systems within a real-time simulation environment. The
focus of the study is to understand the interactions between
inverter-based resources connected via DC and to evaluate
the applicability of established methodologies for AC grids. To
achieve this, small signal disturbances are introduced into the
DC systems via harmonic sources, and the resulting current and
voltage responses are analyzed. The findings demonstrate that
the observed phenomena can be explained by considering the
modeling depth of the equipment. Moreover, the magnitude of the
small-signal disturbance should not exceed 5% of the nominal
values for current and voltage to avoid significantly affecting
the steady-state power flow and thereby distorting the results.
Additionally, measuring the harmonic impedance can facilitate
the detection of high-frequency control instabilities when tuning
the droop constants for DC voltage control.
