Abstract

Throughout 2024, the ongoing war continued to shape the Islamic landscape
in Ukraine. In Government-controlled areas, Islamic organisations carried
on with their religious activities, further developed Muslim chaplaincy, and
extended humanitarian support to people in frontline areas and other vulnerable groups.
Muslims in Ukraine continued to pay a heavy toll because of the conflict.
On 2 September 2024, during a rocket attack on Kyiv, a mosque belonging
to the Асоціація мусульман України (Association of Ukrainian Muslims—
AUM) and the Духовне Управління Мусульман Автономної Республіки
Крим (Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Autonomous Republic
of Crimea—SAMARC) sustained significant damage. In May 2024, a former
imam of the Ісламська організація Сунна (Sunnah Islamic Organisation)
from Kharkiv, and later of one of the SAMARC communities near Kyiv, Arthur
Yakupov, lost his life on the battlefield.
At the same time, Muslim communities in Ukraine saw notable positive
developments. In March 2024, President Volodymyr Zelensky joined Muslim
servicemen, Crimean Tatar Mejlis (national assembly) leaders, and clergy, for
a State Ramadan iftar, continuing a tradition initiated in 2023. Meanwhile,
Russian authorities in occupied territories intensified repression. A number
of Crimean Tatars accused of being Hizb ut-Tahrir members received lengthy
prison sentences or arrests. Emirali Ablaev, Mufti of Crimea and Sevastopol,
was sentenced in absentia to twelve years by a Ukrainian court for supporting
Russia’s aggression.
