Abstract

The article pursues the question to what extent unambiguous world-political statements can be discerned in the British coverage of the race into space. The object of investigation is formed by several live and recorded broadcasts of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) which were produced in the context of the first manned moon landing. In the televisual image, an expression is sought of how the Space Race, which was largely fought by the two superpowers, was perceived and judged by the British public. Taking into account the role of the United Kingdom as a space nation as well as the geopolitical relevance of the former British Empire, it is examined whether the coverage of the tradition-rich and internationally oriented BBC broadcast either American- or Soviet-dominated conceptions or whether it rather tended to propagate a global networking made possible by satellite transmission.
