Fracture of dental crowns is a common clinical failure scenario. The fractures are often caused by cracks in the crown margin. Scientists from dental and design technology have therefore developed a simplified sphero-cylindrical model to evaluate the stress in the crown margin. Using this model, four modern oxide ceramics are investigated both experimentally and by finite element simulation. The results correspond to the expected strength values quantitatively and qualitatively. In addition to material comparison, the validity of the simplified sphero-cylindrical crown model is supported. In the future, the model will be used for further, pre-clinical evaluation and optimization of restoration design.
