Abstract

The identification of hereditary gastrointestinal tumor predisposition syndromes (HGTS) is crucial for effective tumor prevention. Challenges in Germany include the heterogeneity of HGTS, the lack of interaction between professional societies and problems in the registration of family medical histories. Improvement in the identification of at-risk individuals requires interdisciplinary collaboration, education, standardized protocols and screening programs. A simplified screening algorithm based on the evaluation of the predisposition medical history, polyposis, mismatch repair (MMR) protein and microsatellite instability (MSI) assessment, could lower the threshold for further specialized evaluation and potentially enhance the identification of patients with HGTS. Patient education on hereditary tumors is crucial and could be supported through chatbots, social media and other information channels. The enormous digital progress, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and technological innovations in the improvement of diagnostic tests, will undoubtedly transform the processes, screening algorithms and the accuracy of genetic tests in the near future. A holistic strategy integrating interdisciplinarity, education, technology, and research is essential to increase the identification rate of HGTS in Germany.
